Three Blind Mice

Reese, Mara and the Media.  Three Blind Mice.  I have varying degrees of contempt for all of them right now.  I just got finished listening to the press conferences for both of them and it was positively insipid.

Contempt is not a healthy emotion.  I try to be objective and analytical.  It is really hard right now because there was such an enormous vacuum of intelligence at this press conference.

1) Mara is a pretty smart guy.  He held over Coughlin in 2007, told him to change and be more accessible to his players.  That to me was the single greatest reason why the Giants won a title.  The players ran through a wall for Coughlin.  And that was never happening unless the owner ordered Coughlin to change.

Unfortunately, I do not think Mara is using a lot of smarts in his handling of Reese and the injury situation/Barnes.  But it is his team and he has an addicted fan base. He can make mistakes.  Yet the same people come back each year and pay up for it.

Keeping on Reese as GM is just plain denial. He tries to imply that 2 years ago Reese was a Top 10 GM, that he is still a Top 10 GM. Guess what, John- HE WAS NOT A TOP 10 GM two years ago either.  He had already botched Offensive Line huge by 2013.  Denial.

2) The Media are next on my ascending order of contempt.  Their questions were weak.  Kim Jones threw up a sycophantic softball. Where was the probing for true answers to expose the hypocrisy of so many statements and responses by Reese and Mara?  Where were the questions about the Giants and injuries?  There was actually one reporter who began asking about injuries, but he was cut off by someone else and the result was ZERO questions asked on the topic. ZERO. None. It is arguably the single largest issue for the Giants, yet the media boobs are distracted by the old head coach and the new head coach criteria.  YES! We get to sell newspapers, er umm online hits, for the next week or two on speculating who the next head coach will be!!  But never mind that the new head coach is going to inherit a toxic injury drain that will threaten his performance from Day 1. Never mind that Mara said it was a big problem last year that is still unfixed and still derails the team.  Never mind asking for answers to that question.

3) Jerry Ego Reese.  The best for last. The hypocrisy was pretty thick.  Reese- I take full responsibility.  But three sentences later.. I get to throw Tom under the bus for 6 games that Coughlin blew.  Hey, we win and lose as a team. But hey I can’t hack it when JPP blows up his hand. Mara-The talent is bad. But hey, I’m Reese and I am good. I take full responsibility for personnel. But hey I am not the only one making personnel decisions. At least we got one non-beat writer to call it like it is.

Reese had a back and forth with one press guy who challenged him about his record of drafting in middle rounds.  The reporter backed down because he couldn’t cite the data which backed up his assertion.  It’s a good thing I don’t do this for a living, because I would have that data.  It is actually not that terrible an amount of work.  Collect Starts, All Pros and Pro Bowls from 2008 onward. Quantify Reese’s drafts.  If they are all good, then Reese stands out.  If they are not good, hey, Reese isn’t the only one making personnel decisions.
