Another reason why these spring games are not what they appear to be. With the lack of opponents the Mets can play, and thus show their pitchers to, Chris Schwinden has to face the Braves instead of R.A. Dickey. Dickey pitches well, but Schwinden gets hammered in a 7-5 loss which was a definite by-product of the Mets limited options.
On the other hand, no mortal should give up bombs to Michael Bourn. So maybe this outing wasn’t so much of a lie as it was … well, I don’t know what the heck it was. But now we’re getting into that portion of the spring where everybody pretty much knows what they have, what they’re going with, and what’s available if their first options go bust. For the Mets, bank on a few first options either going bust or getting hurt. Heck, who knows when Andres Torres is going to play, and the Mets are currently looking at options there. And they don’t have a lot.
There also isn’t a lot of depth in the rotation, as evidenced by Schwinden getting a start, and Chris Young getting another shot with the Mets after he signed a minor league deal yesterday. I don’t know how much depth we’ll get from him since he only pitched a small handful of times last season, and he got the same surgery Johan Santana got and look how long it took for him to come back. But it’s gotta be difficult for a team with as many questions as the Mets have to not be able to answer all the questions they want to answer from this latter part of spring training, which seems to be to be pretty useless anyway, but even more useless for a team that could actually use a few hints.
