Here’s what bothers me about R.A. Dickey not starting the All-Star game (other than the fact that he deserved it): This isn’t about Matt Cain not deserving the start on his own merits, though Dickey bested Cain in every single category except walks (24-26 for Cain).
This is about Tony La Russa, once again, acting like he’s smarter than the rest of the world by finding an excuse not to start a knuckleballer because Buster Posey supposedly can’t catch it. “See, I’m thinking outside the box! See, I’m a f*cking genius!” Only Tony La Russa can overshadow the players’ accomplishments on the field by interjecting his own “genius”. And he just couldn’t resist doing it one last time … at an all-star game.
And that’s why the all-star game sucks: Fans vote for it like it’s American Idol, and managers act like they want to win while at the same time getting everybody in the ball game … two ideals that are in direct contrast with one another. When all of this idiocy shakes down, two Mets get screwed out of something they deserved: all-star game starts.
So to sum up: To hell with Tony La Russa, to hell with the all-star game, and to hell with the San Francisco Giants. (Oh, and to hell with Matt Cain tipping his hat to the crowd after getting booed for beaning David Wright in the head … or should I have just let that go?)
Hey by the way, did ya see Zack Wheeler in the futures game wearing a Mets hat?
