The Mets threatened to play spoiler on the road when they beat the Brewers at Miller Park on Friday. In our hearts, we all knew it couldn’t last as the Mets dropped the final two games … one because Jerry Manuel ruined Jenrry Mejia’s arm, and one because they got two hits off some guy named Wily making his third major league start. Typical Mets, right? Here’s the goofy part: The two hits were by Andres Torres and Josh Thole. The Mayans have obviously struck again as the Mets are giving out gifts to various National League mediocrity to celebrate the end of the season. And oh good, the Phillies come to Citi Field to kick off a ten game homestand … and we know how much the Mets just love playing at home in front of their fans.
With two and a half weeks left in this latest in a long line of seasons that couldn’t end fast enough, we’re getting a new heaping serving of Mets announcers opining about 2013 to fill time during boring games. One of Sunday’s topics for Keith and Gary was how the Mets handle Ike Davis and Lucas Duda, and how if the Mets don’t think that Duda could handle the outfield then that could affect Ike Davis’ future with the club … as Duda would I guess presumably move to first base. It would be one of those typical Mets moves, which is to say … it would be incredibly f*cking stupid.
Look, I know Davis is hitting .225, and I know is defense took a small step back last season. But he missed almost an entire season with a bizarre ankle injury, then got Valley Fever. You try not having a brutal two months after that. Besides, when you’re rebuilding, you need pieces to build around. Davis is one of those pieces. And if you say “well Davis has more trade value than Duda”, you’re right. Duda doesn’t have a ton of trade value. But there’s a reason for that. First off, Duda is vastly inferior to Davis. And second, even if you wanted to explore a trade for Davis to get pieces back (and you’d have to get some dynamic pieces back and not the same old flawed prospects that only come along once in a week), you sure as hell don’t want to do it after a season in which he’s going to end up with a .225 batting average. Trading Davis combined with giving Lucas Duda first base would be the dumbest thing the Mets have done since Kazmir, and considering that Omar Minaya is sitting in an office in San Diego signing ballplayers, hot dog vendors, and celebrities to imaginary $150 million contracts just to keep in practice for if he ever gets a chance to run a team the way he did in New York and sign players to real contracts, that’s saying a lot.
