The Mets beat the Nationals 13-4 in spring training on Saturday. And while you probably shouldn’t get used to this, I will say this: The Mets have some games to pick up to get over .500 … and they have a lot of games to pick up if they want to contend for a playoff berth. The Mets won four out of 19 against Washington last season. And while the Mets will be better, so will the Nationals, who got Max Scherzer.
Now here’s the good news: Scherzer can only help them one out of every five days, and the Nationals’ bullpen … if there is a weakness on this team … can be had. While I don’t expect the Mets to win the season series against Washington, ask yourself this: If I told you that the Mets would go 7-12 against Washington in 2015, would you sign up for that? I think you would. I would take that and run all the way to the bank with it. That’s three games right there with others to pick up along the way. I think that’s reasonable.
Can the Mets pick up three games against the powerhouse Nationals? If this keeps happening, I think it’s attainable:
[mlbvideo id=”46206583″ width=”400″ height=”224″ /]That was Bunyanesque. (Or Stantonesque, if you will.) Feel free to play that if you need to cheer yourself up from the downer of the Mets settling their lawsuit with Leigh Castergine, effectively meaning that Jeff Wilpon is f*cking teflon and will be a high ranking member of the New York Mets through the rest of his life and with our luck, probably beyond.
(Editor’s note: I typed “working member” originally, then remembered that Jeffy hasn’t worked a day in his life, Silly me.)
Also, John Mayberry Jr. continued his torrid spring with two hits including obliterating a baseball against a lefthander to pad the Mets lead. Mayberry is hitting .375 against lefties, who he should be hitting exclusively against this coming season. But he’s hitting .538 and has an OPS of 1.416 against righties this season, which means he’ll get entirely too many chances against righthanders this season because Terry Collins will fall in love with his veteran presence. Remember, Gary Matthews Jr. had a good spring training with the Mets too.
But forget all that and bask in this majesticness … or something:
