I’m not a believer in the notion that the Mets need a manager who goes into the cluhouse after a game and flips over a buffet table to get his players to “respond”. I think the days of major league players responding to that are long over. Mets fans who think that Wally Backman would come in and get results with this group because he’s able to “light a fire” under their butts just doesn’t understand how any of this actually works.
All of that said … if I managed the Mets tonight, there’s food all over the clubhouse floor after Wednesday’s 2-0 11 inning loss. Because I’m getting absolutely sick and tired of the dopey mistakes and lack of brain function on this team. Forget about the team not scoring a run since 1997. That’s a lack of talent. But when Ruben Tejada, who constantly makes or is involved in little league mistakes, runs past third base on a failed suicide squeeze and takes a step towards left field in a rundown when Daniel Murphy, the trail runner could have easily been dumb himself and stepped off third base to be tagged out himself … that is just about all I can take. When Murphy is the smartest one on the basepaths, you have problems. And I’m done with Tejada. He would have been cut from most major league teams two years ago.
Daniel Murphy letting Anthony Rizzo okee dokee him sliding into third base when the throw beats him by ten feet is something else that’s driving me to drink. Murphy is the kind of mediocre player who we fall in love with but really would be a back up anywhere else. There’s a reason nobody has rushed to trade anybody of value for a singles and doubles hitter who constantly makes bonehead play after bonehead play and doesn’t ever learn a damn thing.
And Terry Collins is going to shake up the lineup? Terrific! When the S.S. Minnow crashes back into the island I’m sure Ginger and Mary Ann will be comforted knowing that Gilligan at least tried to rearrange the life preservers before the harsh realization that the Mets are never going to get off the island of Flushing.
