The Jacob deGrom from Tuesday night was what SNY’s post game show kept calling “a carbon copy” of the Jacob deGrom from Game 5 of last year’s NLDS. Well guess what? You’re going to see a lot of that Jacob deGrom this year. And that’s a good thing, because without his best stuff, he still knows how to compete. And he will give the Mets a chance to win most times out.
The problem is that Alex Wood wasn’t a carbon copy of what he was in Game 3 of last year’s NLDS, when he gave up a home run to Yoenis Cespedes which brought the house down. Instead, he gave up one earned run in six and a third innings to keep the Dodgers in the game until Trayce Thompson hit a walk off home run after Hansel Robles shook off Kevin Plawecki. Now, I could swear I heard that whenever there’s a shake off, a hitter usually looks fastball. So maybe that’s what happened … but the fastball wasn’t very good as it turned left into the heart of the plate like it was a tourist driving in Manhattan blocking traffic for no good reason. Thompson playing the part of the local, smacked it. (Well actually, a local would never make the mistake of driving in Manhattan, but that’s another conversation.) So it didn’t matter much whether there was a shake off or not. The pitch stunk.
The good news is that it’s Thor on the mound tonight. The bad news is that the Dodgers are bringing up every brother of every NBA star to face him. Seth Curry, Robin Lopez, Marquis Teague … they’ll all be there. Even Taylor Griffin will make an appearance.
