Steven Matz’s elbow barked yesterday. So rather than rolling the dice, Terry Collins has decided to skip Matz’s next turn to give him a little extra rest. Rather than take the road previously popular among Mets medical experts, which was to give the player another start because “it’s no big deal”, measure an injury’s seriousness by the level of star the player was, and to put other players on airplanes with concussions, Collins is taking the road less traveled … the road of concern:
Collins said the Mets are being particularly cautious with Matz because of a bad experience handling the southpaw last season. Matz felt lat discomfort after his 2015 major league debut but was allowed to proceed with his next start at Dodger Stadium. That potentially worsened the issue, and Matz subsequently spent two months on the disabled list.
As reported, Logan Verrett will start on Saturday, and Sean Gilmartin will likely be called up in favor of Eric Campbell, costing Campbell the chance to hit 10 home runs at Coors Field this weekend (because that was happening.) I can originally report that I will repeatedly chant with the local Buddhists to ensure that I will not panic over this. And that I can remind myself that no one singular injury can sink this team, which is built to withstand a little chaos. We are thankful for this, and delighted that this is finally the case. As for Matz, he can finally take time out from watching film to binge watch House Of Cards.
