Yesterday I argued that the Mets deserved to find out what an alternate universe had in store had Carlos Torres not made a terrible call on what should have been a Tony Wolters strikeout. Today, I’m sure there would have been an alternate universe which would have shown us what would have happened had Rob Drake not called Juan Lagares for being out of the baseline for the third out of the eighth inning, and the Mets had the tying and go ahead run on second and third with two outs and Neil Walker up. It was a terrible call as Lagares wasn’t trying to avoid a tag as Nolan Arenado wasn’t attempting a tag, he was just trying to avoid Arenado himself. And he never even stepped on the grass. You get three feet either way, and Lagares took a slight and necessary detour. I’m not sure what Rob Drake expected Lagares to do in that situation. It could have changed the outcome of the game.
But unlike the Wolters play, the chances that the game would have ended differently was, at best, 50/50. And the Mets didn’t deserve to find out what that alternate universe held. Because they played sloppy. Michael Conforto turning an out into a double in left field set up the first Colorado run. Alejandro de Aza shouldn’t be playing so deep on the pitcher, who got a bloop hit in the fifth which caused Jacob deGrom to throw 17 more pitches than he should have, and perhaps setting up deGrom giving up a homer to Carlos Gonzalez. And Jim Henderson should not be throwing in back to back games. We saw what kinds of problems that caused in April, so why Terry Collins tried it again in May … at Coors Field … is beyond me. But it burned him as Henderson gave up the game winning two run dinger to Ryan Raburn. Point being, bad call or not (and Rob Drake made a horrible call), the Mets didn’t deserve it today. They deserved to have their sweep completed on them. They had a chance to gain on Washington and Philadelphia (yup, the Phillies are in second place), but they couldn’t get it done and they deserve to have it should sting them for a while.
No more whining about umpires. Time to tighten up, be smart and be present. You-know-who is coming to town.
