When Jon Lester got out of the first inning in something like four pitches (it was actually ten, but to hell with research … you do that), I knew that things weren’t going to go the way they did when Lester pitched against the Mets at Citi Field. But hey, you can’t expect to knock out a world class pitcher in the second inning twice in a row. Because dreams don’t come true.
Steven Matz hasn’t won in forevs, as the kids say. (Actually, since May 25th. But again, screw research.) And once he got bit by his old bugaboo … tipping the changeup … by Anthony Rizzo for a three run dinger, that was all she wrote in retrospect. Speaking of bugaboos, the Mets had chances throughout the game to get a key hit and put pressure on the Cubs. But it was Asdrubal “Hyde” Cabrera who grounded into a double play to put a rally on life support early, then it was feeble swings by Neil Walker in the eighth with runners on to meekly strike out, then Travis d’Arnaud in the ninth who couldn’t resist the forbidden fruit of the outside fastball and ended the game on a double play.
That, combined with the Phillies strangling away a two run ninth inning lead to the Marlins means that the Mets are in third place. Hooray. I hear rumors that mediocrity is planning a surprise party to celebrate our return. Just like the party that the bench is going to throw when Wilmer Flores hits it again after hitting a home run on Monday.
