The New England Patriots have released an update on injured tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is unexpected to play again this season due to back surgery.
“With the help of the Patriots medical staff, along with the consultation of several medical experts, it has been determined that it is in Rob’s best long-term interest to undergo surgery to address his lower back injury,” the statement read. “Rob is expected to have surgery tomorrow. We do not expect that he will be able to play for the remainder of the 2016 season, but will await the results of tomorrow’s surgery before making a final determination.”
Gronkowski left New England’s win over the New York Jets last Sunday after suffering a back injury. He had “significant pain” in both his back and leg, and he did not return to the contest.
The injury is believed to be a ruptured disc in his back.
Gronkowski, 27, had 25 catches for 540 yards and three touchdowns over eight games in 2016.
The Patriots will hope Friday’s surgery ends in a better diagnosis for his short-term health. If not, New England will have to go about winning another Super Bowl without their All-Pro tight end.
