Oilers Trade Jeff Petry To Montreal

Early start to trade deadline day as the Oilers have traded D Jeff Petry to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a 2015 2nd round draft pick and a conditional 2015 5th round draft pick. The 5th round pick becomes a 4th rounder if Montreal wins a playoff round, and becomes a 3rd rounder if Montreal wins two playoff rounds this spring.

Personally, I hate this trade. Petry was Edmonton’s best defender, and was just moved for two draft picks, aka magic beans. This is what bad teams do. Edmonton developed Petry for eight and a half seasons just to deal him right when he hits his prime. Again, this is what bad teams do.

Sure, Petry might not have wanted to re-sign, but what do you think drove him away? This one is on MacT and Edmonton’s management, they dropped the ball big time.

We knew that this deal would happen, and we knew Montreal was possible as a destination. The Oilers got this done early, and will turn their attention elsewhere now.

Edmonton now has two first round picks, two second round picks and two third round picks in the upcoming NHL entry draft.

More to come as it happens.
