Oilers Acquire F Brad Ross

The Edmonton Oilers have made another deal, trading D Martin Marincin to the Toronto Maple Leafs for F Brad Ross and pick 107 in the NHL draft.

This trade is a little upsetting because Marincin is a good defender. He’s got some size and he handled some tough assignments in the NHL with success. I think this player will make it in the NHL, potentially as a top-four defender. He was great for Edmonton in 2013-14 when paired with Jeff Petry.

After being mishandled in camp last season, Marincin struggled to start, but improved under Todd Nelson from January on. In my mind, he was one of Edmonton’s better defenders towards the end of the season.

Regardless, Edmonton didn’t value him that way, and thus he is going to Toronto.

Brad Ross was suspended for a large portion of this past season due to steroid use. He played ten games in the ECHL last season, scoring eleven points. In the AHL, Ross was far less effective, scoring only eight points in 32 games for the Marlies.

Ross is big, 6’1” and 190 pounds, but he’s clearly a project. Odds are he starts next season in Bakersfield with the Condors.

More to come.

***UPDATED: 12:58 est***: Brad Ross, the forward in this deal, has been signed in Germany for the upcoming season. That means he won’t be in Bakersfield in October or in camp come September. Credit to Jason Gregor at Oilersnation for pointing this out. Press release on the signing is here.
