Breaking: The Edmonton Oilers are expected hire, U of A Golden Bears head coach, Ian Herbers as an assistant coach.

Yup, seems as though you can check this off the Oilers to-do list. The Oilers are expected to fill out the final spot on their coaching staff today. A coaching vacancy opened up with Edmonton when, former eye in the sky guy, Rocky Thompson left Edmonton to take a head coaching position in the OHL with the Windsor Spitfires. Herbers has been in the coaching game since 2004, coaching at a variety of different levels, including time in the AHL, ECHL, OHL, WHL, and most recently as the head coach of the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the CIS.

The hometown hire makes a considerable amount of sense in my opinion. The Oilers have 3 top-notch and experienced guys in McLellan, Woodcraft, and Johnson already so Herbers won’t be thrust into a position he isn’t capable of handling himself. Herbers has also been quite a successful coach at the CIS level, winning the CIS championship with the Golden Bears just last year. This is a no risk move for the Oilers, Herbers is a developing coach who has had previous success and can only benefit alongside a stellar staff around him. Nothing has been officially announced yet, but there is a report out there suggesting this is almost a for sure thing.

The report comes from Kelowna Courier reporter, Larry Fisher:
