Well, Oilers fans will be crushed, but it seems Tyson Barrie has negotiated a deal with the Avalanche that will see him stay in Colorado for another 4 years. No word yet if he reached this agreement with the team during arbitration, or if the deal was awarded by the arbitrator.
I said in my previous blog that I felt Barrie would not be traded and would be spending at least one more year in Colorado, and apparently I was actually right about something for once. While the Oilers could desperately use Barrie’s offensive talent and presence on the powerplay, it would seem it wasn’t meant to be. In all likelihood the Oilers will be headed to training camp with the current roster.

Who’s Left?
There aren’t many options left on the open market for players who could fill the oilers need for a right handed defenceman with some offensive skill. If he’s still without a contract come september, I would expect to see James Wisniewski get an invite to training camp for a tryout. Other than that I don’t see many other viable options for the Oilers on the right side that fill the specific need they have.

As per Terry Frei of the Denver Post, the Avalanche and Barrie reached an agreement before the arbitrator’s ruling was handed down:
“Shortly before arbitrator Elizabeth Neumeier was to issue her decision Sunday, the Avalanche signed defenseman Tyson Barrie to a four-year, $22-million deal. Barrie will make $5 million, $5.25 million, $5.75 million and $6 million in the next four seasons, for an annual cap hit of $5.5 million.
The Avalanche and the Barrie camp had gone through a salary arbitration hearing, with Neumeier presiding, in Toronto Friday. That didn’t rule out a side deal before the decision was announced. Neumeier was to email the parties her decision on term and salary, with a brief summary of her reasoning, within 48 hours of the end of the hearing Friday afternoon.“
Given the fact that both sides reached an agreement before the arbitrator’s ruling, I think we can safely assume this isn’t a sign and trade, and Barrie will remain with the Avalanche for at least one more season. Still no word on whether or not the deal includes a NTC or NMC, but as it stands it seems like a good contract for both parties.
