Off-Season Transaction Comparison

.

While I had to tag this, “statistical analysis,” as I’m looking at statistics this post shouldn’t be taken as one delving deep into analytics. I’ve failed in the past in the attempt at integrating advanced statistics into my posts and produced horrific results. What I want to do early in the season is look at the statistics of the Edmonton Oilers most high profile deletions and acquisitions from the past off season. The standard boxcars were taken from NHL.com* and the Corsi For % was taken from puckalytics.com*.

comparison

The intent of this post is not to be an exhaustive analysis of each of these players barely a quarter of the way through the season. However, these side-by-side comparisons can be interesting and can often spark debate. For example, I find it interesting that Hall and Lucic have the same number of goals even though Lucic’s play has been seen as underwhelming of late (for more on that topic you can look here and here). On the flip side, the now injured Hall, has been viewed favorably in New Jersey.

It is also interesting that Nail Yakupov is struggling to find ice-time in New Jersey and is scoring below the pace he set as an Oiler. His totals so far this season for St. Louis project to 12 goals and 24 points if he played 82 games. His numbers as an Oiler projected to 16 goals and 36 points over 82 games. Though it is still early it does not look like Yakupov will hit 15 goals and grant the Oilers a second round selection. Kris Russell is almost averaging as many points per game as the former first overall pick.

I was also surprised to see that both Kris Russell and Taylor Hall (though barely) are averaging more time-on-ice per game than Adam Larsson. It is probably too early (it may take a few seasons) to draw any definitive conclusions about Peter Chiarelli‘s big bet, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Do you have any thoughts?
