New York Yankees v New York Mets

The Subway Series is over, and it couldn’t come soon enough for the New York Mets (53-66). The Mets got swept away by the New York Yankees, who have lost four games in a row to fall a season high 13 games below .500. Now that the Yankees are off the schedule the Mets will look to bounce back when they continue their homestand tonight against the Miami Marlins (58-61). First pitch for the opener of the weekend set is scheduled for 7:10 pm at Citi Field.

The Mets will send righty Chris Flexen (2-1, 7.02 ERA) to the mound tonight. Flexen earned his second big league win last Sunday, allowing two runs in five innings of work to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins will counter with lefty Justin Nicolino (1-1, 4.56 ERA). Nicolino earned his first win of the season in his last start, giving up two runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings pitched to beat the Colorado Rockies last Sunday.

  • The Marlins have never faced Flexen before.
  • Nicolino is 0-1 with a 5.29 ERA in five career appearances (three starts) against the Mets.
  • The Mets are 6-7 against the Marlins so far this season, including a 3-3 mark at Citi Field.
  • The Mets won two out of three against the Marlins at Marlins Park when the two teams last met in late June.
  • With a lefty on the mound the Mets will sit both Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson. Juan Lagares will play center field and bat leadoff while Brandon Nimmo will start in right and bat eighth.
  • After sitting for the last two games with rib cage soreness, Wilmer Flores is back in the Mets’ lineup. Flores will cleanup and play first base, giving Dominic Smith a night off against the lefty Nicolino.
