The New York Mets (54-70) are in complete free fall this month. Last night’s 7-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks (69-57) was the Mets’ 16th in 21 games this month, leaving them in a tie with the Detroit Tigers for the fifth worst record in baseball. This may pay off down the line if the Mets end up getting a premier prospect via a high draft pick next June, but it is no doubt grinding on the players who are simply playing out the string. The Mets will look to snap their latest three game losing streak tonight as they continue their series with the Diamondbacks. First pitch for the third game of this four game series is scheduled for 7:10 pm at Citi Field.
The Mets will send rookie right hander Chris Flexen (2-2, 6.55 ERA) to the mound tonight. Flexen was decent in his last start, giving up three runs in 5.1 innings against the Miami Marlins last Friday, but was stuck with his second loss of the year thanks to a lack of run support. The Diamondbacks will counter with another young righty, Zack Godley (5-6, 3.13 ERA). Godley struggled in his last outing, giving up four runs in 5.1 innings to lose to the Minnesota Twins last Friday.
