The veteran purge has claimed another pending free agent for the New York Mets. Catcher Rene Rivera was claimed off waivers this morning by the Chicago Cubs, ending the backup’s two year run with the Mets. This makes Rivera the seventh veteran with an expiring contract to depart the Mets in the last month, leaving the roster looking very different than the one they began the season with. Kevin Plawecki has been recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Rivera’s place on the active roster. In 174 at bats for the Mets this season, the 34 year old Rivera is batting .230 with eight homers and 23 RBI’s.
The Mets also announced that they have activated lefty Tommy Milone from the disabled list to take Curtis Granderson’s roster spot. Milone, who is 0-2 with a 10.50 ERA in three starts for the Mets this season, gives them an option if they choose to skip the struggling Steven Matz’s next start.
