So the Mets continued the slide of my soul to the core of the earth by losing 4-0 to the Pirates, getting no hit through the first six innings of the game to Jameson Tallion and his 91 pitches, and getting three hits all game. At the risk of sounding like Johnny from Major League II, this is getting disgusting. I’m not sure if this is better than last year’s offensive outage because a lot of it is due to injuries and those players will eventually come back (though David Wright and the Mets are contemplating surgery on his neck that would pretty much keep him out the entire season), or worse because last year’s problems were fixed by Yoenis Cespedes, and there isn’t another Cespedes on the way. Sandy Alderson was talking about how Brandon Nimmo is tearing it up in AAA as if Brandon Nimmo is going to save this team.
What’s scary is that Terry Collins is starting to sound like he did last year when he says things like “This is what the lineup is, we gotta step up. Can’t worry about injuries.” I don’t know what he’s supposed to say other than that, but it sure as hell sounds like we’re going to be wading in the Hudson River clinging to a 2X4 for dear life. Wright, Lucas Duda, Neil Walker, whatever decent catcher is on the roster, all on the shelf. And that’s not even counting Juan Lagares and Michael Conforto, who are both hurt and both pinch hit on Thursday, with the latter hitting mere hours after a cortisone shot. It kinda renders Cespedes useless as there are hitters in this lineup that are so easy to pitch to that pitchers can expend 90% of their energy getting Cespedes out. And now guys like Jacob deGrom have to be perfect to keep the Mets in the game at 0-0. It isn’t hard to figure out, but it’s gut wrenching much the same.
If there’s a mixture of novocaine, chicken soup, Biofreeze, designer steroids and cocaine that can get these guys healthy tomorrow, whether it be in a rub, a pill or a syringe, I’d do it. To hell with my soul. It was bought and paid for by this baseball franchise long ago.
