The Decision has been made. After much speculation, we finally know where the young phenom Auston Matthews is headed. The highly sought Matthews is headed to scenic Switzerland to play for the ZSC Lions.
Earlier in the summer, Matthews ruled out going the NCAA route. Honestly, that makes sense, Matthews would have been a one and down college player.
Many, including me had thought he was headed to the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, who own his rights. Well, we finally know where he’s headed.
Per Swiss Hockey News:
The problem is that non-EU players only get a work visa if they had been under contract with a pro-team for at least one year. As the ZSC Lions inform, they have reached an agreement that Matthews is only allowed to play after his 18th birthday which is on September 17. In addition, there is now a bilateral treaty between Switzerland and the USA about young professionals.
