“They’ve got a good team. They’ve done a nice job. I don’t think we’re that far away. (…) They’re going to be in good shape. They are young, and they’re going to have another year under their belts, too. But we’ve made a lot of changes here, and I agree exactly with what [general manager Sandy Alderson] said three months ago. We’re very, very close.” –Terry Collins
Close? The Mets are as close to the playoffs as Papelbon’s nuts. I’d settle for being close to scoring a run. 14-39 against the Nationals in the last three years. Sure, that’s close … if you’re comparing it to, say, an asteroid coming to within 25,000 miles of destroying the earth … which would be a sure sign that the Mets are actually getting good … the end of the world. So sometimes, 25,000 miles is close, see? It’s all relative.
And as long as Terry Collins comes out and says stuff like this, there will never be any urgency to get better. No reason to upgrade at any position. No reason to spend $100 million on a budding star. Don’t measure in money, “we’re on the cusp of something great“. Sure … keep empowering the people who put more stock in an 8-2 stretch before the All-Star break than the six years that the Mets haven’t sniffed a truly meaningful game.
I’d say the bullseye is squarely on the backs of Collins and Sandy Alderson with these comments, but does it really matter if the Wilpons are putting their rubber stamp on this line of bull shit because the costs are going to be kept down? I’d love to say that Sandy and Terry had better be right, but what’s going to happen if they’re not? Two more people will come in and do the exact same thing with the exact same payroll but win 85 games? So that everybody in the starting rotation can go 10-13 with ERA’s of 3.29 because this team can’t hit? So they can pay Chris Young to hit .500 for the Yankees?
Hat tip to the boys at Faith and Fear in Flushing for alerting me to this quote and making me angry at one in the morning when I should really be getting some sleep. More indisputable proof that, along with a 3-0 loss on Sunday, that this team is detrimental to my health.
