A buddy of mine said to me that he felt that the Mets would win on Friday. Mind you this was pretty much immediately after the Mets got swept by the Cubs. Facing Clayton Kershaw on the mound after a long flight seems way too easy to write off. People that watch a lot of baseball … I mean a lot of baseball … understand that it makes sense in its penchant for making no sense.
And thus, the Mets won. Kershaw was cancelled out by Noah Syndergaard, who gave up a lone home run by Adrian Gonzalez but nothing since … tantalizing the Dodgers (and Yasiel Puig) with a nasty hook. The Mets tied the game in the fourth when John Mayberry Jr. scored on a Wilmer Flores single (yes, the Mets won a game with John Mayberry Jr. as their cleanup hitter … more proof that baseball makes perfect sense), and then scored the winner in the ninth on a Lucas Duda bloop double, an infield hit by Flores, and a sac fly by Kevin Plawecki … all after being down 0-2 against their closer Kenley Jansen. No Ryan Church missing third base, no Snoop Manuel putting Jeremy Reed at first base for some stupid reason. No typical Dodger Stadium hijinx … just a win. A win while scoring two runs, which is more a testament to their pitchers, but a win nonetheless.
With the Dodgers, Giants, and Diamondbacks coming up on the schedule, there’s been some talk that Terry Collins might not survive the road trip. And by talk, I mean among my friends. I personally think the chances of that are slim to none. Friday’s win eliminated slim.
Today’s Hate List
Not really a list, but more of a “hate observation”: Loved how it was noted today how Justin Turner, who is having his best season, became a different hitter after working with Marlon Byrd. The same Marlon Byrd who the Mets thought overcoached his teammates. Funny how that worked out.
