Multiple Internet sites are reporting that Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winner and Boston University All-American Jack Eichel is going to forgo his college eligibility and sign with the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL.

Eichel was drafted second overall by the Sabres in last weekend’s 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Per Scott McLaughlin: Shawn Stepner of WKBW Buffalo is reporting  that Eichel is set to sign with the Sabres.

A source tells me Jack Eichel will be in Buffalo today and will sign his first pro contract with the #Sabres today.

Congrats to BU’s Eichel. I don’t any of us is all that shocked about this relevation. I think it was just a matter of when he was going to sign a contract. Eichel has nothing left to accomplish in college  and is NHL ready. I know I am not really going out on a limb here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the running for the Calder Trophy next season. Obviously, Connor McDavid is going to be the favorite.

There is also an upside to all of this. While college hockey definitely benefits from having a blue chip player like Eichel playing in the NCAA. There is some relief for college hockey fans that aren’t Terriers fans, and we’re celebrating. We no longer have to listen to the  ESPN announcers slobbering all over themselves with their bromance for Jack.

Last year’s Frozen Four was ridiculous, it was all Eichel all of the time. There were other players playing in the Frozen Four that could have been discussed more. So, we will be Eichel free next season during the NCAA regionals and the Frozen Four.
