“Can You Believe This?”

I said it five days ago, I’ll say it today, and I’ll continue to say it every time he starts for the rest of this season: Jacob deGrom deserves a ton of credit for trying to drag this carcass to the finish line. He started slow and gave up a couple of runs in the first inning, and really could have bagged it right then and there. But as deGrom is want to do, he battled through it and went six innings, struck out ten, and gave up three hits and three walks. He’s impervious to your criticism the rest of the season. Don’t even.

The Mets had a 5-2 lead in the seventh and Paul Sewald was about to get out of the inning with a double play ball. But Jose Reyes threw it wide and extended the inning. And wouldn’t you know it, Zack Cozart, who won a donkey for making the All-Star team, hit a three run HR to tie the game and give deGrom the 2005 Pedro. Who knew it would take a Zack Cozart home run to make Gary Cohen break out the Al Michaels inspired “can you believe this” call … not after the home run but during it. You know it’s bad when Gare gets exasperated with this team and it’s costly errors.

Jeurys Familia then reminded us that he’s still coming back from a medical condition by giving up three runs in the eighth, and Hansel Robles finished the job by giving up two runs in the ninth for a 10-5 Mets loss to Cincinnati. deGrom’s start, a Dominic Smith home run, two hits each by Reyes and Travis d’Arnaud, your time on a Sunday … all wasted. It’s enough to make you generally sore.

Meanwhile, Jay Bruce is 19-5 as an Indian.
