You go to Sandy Alderson’s office and ask for help. “Look, we’ve started out too well to let this thing die. If you get me a second baseman from outside the organization with anything left, I know we can win this division. Trust me on this.”
Sandy is receptive and starts making some phone calls. And days later, he asks you to attend a press conference to announce your new signing. You can’t contain your excitement as you drive to Citi Field early for the news conference, but find it odd that Alderson never told you who this second baseman actually is. You get to the stadium and you ask: “By the way, who did you get?”
“A guy from the Japanese league hungry for a second chance. You’ll like him.”
Your heart sinks.
“F**k.”
