You leave in Murphy to hope he wins the game for you in the ninth. The Pirates lead off with a ground ball base hit up the middle, and in the hole for another base hit … both balls that Murphy just missed. Then, Taylor Buchholz comes in to try to get Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play, which he does 6-4-3. Murphy turned a sweet double play to minimize the damage.
But in the process Murphy, who hadn’t turned a lot of double plays before this season, landed hard on the ground to become the first major league player in the modern era to literally break every bone in his body. Disheartened at the sight of seeing Murphy carried off the field in a stretcher, Buchholz gives up a base hit to score the run from third with two outs, and the Mets lose 4-3.
Murphy is listed as day-to-day with a sprained knee (remember, you still have the same medical staff), and the Mets need a new second baseman. Your choices:
