You go all in and bite the head off a chicken to prove that you mean business. Granted, it was the ceramic chicken that Alderson uses as a paperweight, and you might have chipped a tooth in the process. But it was worth it. Sandy and company see your point, and Luis Hernandez is the starting second baseman for the New York Mets.
To start the season, you’re proven right. Hernandez is hitting a respectable .260 and is solid in the field for the first couple of months. But somewhere around the middle of June, Luis starts to slide, dipping into the .230 range and developing the yips at second with some throws. You have a decision to make. Your choices:
Bench Luis for a game here and a game there to get his head straight, but let him work through his problems on the field.
Name a new starter and try to jump start the team.
