Condors Sign Ziyat Paigin to an ATO

Colorado Avalanche v Winnipeg Jets

The Bakersfield Condors announced today that they have signed Ziyat Paigin to an Amateur Try Out contract.

Paigin was drafted by the Oilers in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The big Russian defenceman played three seasons in the KHL. Last year, Paigin had a breakthrough season, scoring a total of 9 goals and 19 assists in 45 games. This season, he ran into injury trouble and tallied only 1 goal and 3 assists in 17 games.

Back in the fall, Lowetide ranked Paigin as the Oilers’ fifth best prospect. ESPN’s Corey Pronman in a recent Reddit AMA, had this to say about Paigin: “Dude definitely has a good offensive game and a freaking cannon from the point.”

Now that Paigin has been signed by the Condors to an ATO, he’ll get a taste of AHL action before presumably signing a professional contract with the Oilers this summer. And it’s expected that Ziyat will be joined in Bakersfield this coming fall by two other defenceman drafted by the Oilers in 2015: Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones.

History tells us that not all four will become NHLers, but Paigin, Mantha, Bear, and Jones are all solid prospects.
