Hey Connor, you’re gonna need a bigger trophy case! After clinching the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading scorer during the regular season back in April (30-70-100), Connor McDavid has the second major award of his career under his belt. The sophomore forward is the winner of the Ted Lindsay Award as the most outstanding player as voted by the players.
McDavid joins Mark Messier (1990) and Wayne Gretzky (1982, ’83, ’84, ’85 and ’87) as Oilers to win this award. Both Messier and Gretzky won when the award was named the “Lester B. Pearson Award”. The name changed on April 29th, 2010.
McDavid is, without doubt, the biggest reason why the Edmonton Oilers are once again relevant in the NHL. McDavid is the team’s leader, their best player and by far most popular player. His ability and his stardom has made the Oilers a hot commodity on TV’s all over BOTH the United States and Canada.
The speed, skill and overall dominance shown by McDavid this past season proves that he was the league’s best player during the 82 game regular season. It seemed like every single shift something exciting would happen, and he was the focal point of a very exciting Oiler team.
McDavid deserved this award and there really isn’t a debate in my mind. He was the best player in the NHL in only his second season and he helped lead the Oilers back to relevance. What we witnessed this winter was one of the finest seasons in club history, and that is saying something.
This is a huge moment for the Oilers as well, as it confirms what we all believed to be true when the club reached the playoffs….they are once again relevant.
McDavid can win his third award of the season later on tonight when the Hart Trophy (MVP) gets awarded. McDavid will be up against Sidney Crosby and Sergei Bobrovsky for the honor.
