Cost of Attendance

Right now, the cost of attendance stipends are a major subject for discussion in college athletics. In the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Colorado College, North Dakota, Miami, Western Michigan have announced that they’re giving out COA’s. The rest of the conference is taking a wait and see approach.

Most conferences are leaving it up to the individual schools. According to Brad Schlossman, Saint Cloud State isn’t planning on giving them out at this time.

There’re so many unknowns right now.

First, how do you quantify if the cost of attendance stipends will give the schools that hand them out an advantage? Obviously, it will take a while before we figure out how much of an advantage these cost of attendance stipends will give the schools that hand them out. In the future, I think you will see other schools rushing to catch up.

Boston College hockey coach Jerry York told the Boston Globe his thoughts on the cost of attendance.

“I’m still not sure what drives an athlete to pick a school,” said BC hockey coach Jerry York, who also worked at Bowling Green and Clarkson. “There are so many variables. I think that [a stipend] will be a factor. I don’t know if it will be a deciding factor.”
