Breaking news for you: the owners have agreed to a 24-hour extension to avoid a lockout.
That’s right, the owners of the Mets, the Wilpons, have agreed not to lock out the Mets for the next 24 hours. The Wilpons have decided that locking out the Mets from the 2011 season would ultimately cut down on overhead and save money due to low ticket sales … because they can’t get another loan and they may have to return their fictitious profits (the courts decided that their war chest to survive a Mets lockout was also illegal and in bad faith). The Wilpons will look for other ways to save money.
Too bad that one option to that end doesn’t include convincing Oliver Perez to join the retire and join the circus. No, after reportedly being one start away from oblivion, his two scoreless innings against the Cardinals scout team with hurricane force winds blowing in from the outfield will most likely buy him at least another appearance, and continue the discussion about how much more valuable an 84 mph strike is than a 92 mph wild pitch. Because wild pitches are worth one base, while 84 mph strikes during the regular season become doubles.
The Mets have also reportedly decided that Ollie (Bumaye) will not be a starter during the regular season (unless it’s the Newark Bears’ regular season), and that he’ll probably still be released. This would mean that this spring training exercise has been the very complete waste of time we all knew it would be. But at the very least, even though the Mets aren’t going to be locked out of the baseball season, at least one Met’s keys will be taken away.
Too bad impersonating a major league pitcher isn’t against the team’s honor code.
