The home run needs an image consultant.
Amongst the dingers that were leaving the yard on Monday night, Asdrubal Cabrera drove in a run with a single. Gary Cohen went into the “for a team that is so reliant on the home run …” as if the home run was an illegal drug that the Mets are addicted to. Imagine something you’ve loved for years and was told was paramount to life was all of a sudden a bad thing. It’s like hearing that breakfast isn’t the most important meal of the day after all.
The Mets will need the home run now more than ever as Lucas Duda is out for 4-6 weeks and Eric Campbell will be manning first base. The Mets got three of them tonight against Gio Gonzalez including a big three run shot by David Wright as the Mets beat the Nationals 7-1. As more and more things are uncertain, such as Duda’s injury, Matt Harvey’s mechanics, Matt Harvey’s velocity, Matt Harvey’s mental state, Matt Harvey’s … well you get the picture, the home run is completely necessary to get us through the dark times. And we shouldn’t be so quick to shun the home run as something that isn’t sustainable. Without it, the season seems longer and emptier … much like you without breakfast. So let’s appreciate the home run before it leaves us because we’re complaining about it so much.
Bartolo Colon bounced back from his bizarre outing last time out to go seven innings while giving up only one run on five hits. He did walk two, which for him is like walking ten or going up to the bank teller and telling them he’s Oliver Perez. So I’m a little bit frightened. But it’s nice to know he can still pitch on days when the Post decides not to put him on the front cover for things that don’t affect our lives one bit.
Tuesday, it’s Matt Harvey’s turn to give us his great comeback story, or his swan song on his way to the disabled list for some sort of “injury”. Because if he bombs on a night that he demanded the ball and the chance to make everything right, we’ll all be wondering “now what?” Let’s hope either that doesn’t happen, or that the Mets hit a few home runs to cover up the stink.
