Friday was the kind of win we don’t often see from this incarnation of the New York Mets. A 7-1 victory over Miami which started with great pitching, contained early runs courtesy of Lucas Duda’s two run home run to put the game away, and where the late innings provided no drama in which to give us all heart attacks. And sprinkled in is a great defensive play like the one Kirk Nieuwenhuis made in sliding by the wall to stop a hit and come up firing a perfect strike to the cut-off man to start a 7-6-2 play at the plate which stomped all hope out of the opposing team.
Good teams do this every so often. When a bad team does it, it’s an oasis of fresh hubris. A win like this is a good time for me to recalibrate as a Mets fan. Sure, it’s frustrating that wins like this don’t come as often as they should. But with a mediocre roster such as this, that these victories come at all is something to be treasured. Wins are wins are wins, and the Mets have five wins of their last six games. But wins like Friday’s are the ones that are the most encouraging … especially off a pitcher in Henderson Alvarez who the Mets have had trouble with in the past. Duda is hitting well, David Wright, who had a second tank home run, is on a good streak. The pitching is restaurant quality … not much is wrong except the record.
I know this is a big tease. But I’m ready to enjoy this as long as it lasts.
