Final Destination: First Base

We're not two innings into this spring training game against the Marlins, and already we're on sensory overload. First comes the news that Ike Davis is in a walking boot and will miss a week. Translated to Mets language: "Ike Davis has played his last game in the major leagues after being forced to retire with the acute affliction of being a Mets first baseman." Combined with Lucas Duda's hamstring, you have your typical Mets luck. Two first basemen to choose from, who other teams require some spring training action to evaluate them for a trade. Both first basemen get hurt and can't play. Awesome.

Jason might have been more right than he knew as we almost had an accident of epic proportions. Watch this kid in the scooter roll down the hill after father of the year abandons him for a Chris Young ground rule double today:

Final Destination: First Base

That scooter was right in line to hit Josh Satin in the ankle causing gangrene if that wall hadn't been there.

We also have the first round of cuts, as Josh Edgin was sent down in a surprising move until you realize he hasn't been that good. This means that John Lannan might be in line to be the second lefty in the bullpen to make sure that Scott Rice doesn't die. It also means one less pitcher in the way of either Jenrry Mejia or Rafael Montero to take the fifth spot in the rotation.

Then there's Ruben Tejada, who made another error in today's game which continues his horrible start to spring training. Not that I think that Ruben is necessarily going to go back to his 2012 form, but I don't think I want to put too much stock into this … if for no other reason than Tejada started spring 2013 by hitting a home run off Stephen Strasburg. How did the rest of 2013 work out?

(All that said, all of the Mets sniping at Tejada is all sorts of wrong … whether it has an effect on Tejada or not.)

Also of note today is Bartolo Colon's first Grapefruit League appearance of the season after battling some calf issues. Colon has pitched in some intrasquad games so he was able to start off Grapefruit by going four innings and 60 pitches. The fourth inning was a surprise to me, and sure enough Terry Collins held true to his "one inning too long" mantra as Bartolo gave up three innings in the fourth.

Asked after the outing how his calf was, Colon said it was delicious after he braised it and marinated it in Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce.
