It doesn’t even bother me that Vincent Velasquez cut through the Mets like a hot knife through what’s left of my brain. He’s a decent prospect who came over in the Ken Giles trade and might work out to be something. It doesn’t even bother me that the Mets made the Phillies bullpen look unhittable and gave a journeyman named Jeanmar Gomez his second career save. But if you had told me that David Hernandez was going to face Asdrubal Cabrera, Yoenis Cespedes, and Lucas Duda in the eighth inning down by a run, and be behind 3-0 on Cabrera, 2-0 on Cespedes, and 3-1 on Duda, I would expect the post game fireworks to come in the eighth inning. But would you believe that after being behind on all three batters, Hernandez had a 1-2-3 inning? That’s infuriating.
And that lost this game. It wasn’t the absence of David Wright, who was taking a scheduled day off because he has the back of a hundred-year-old man. It wasn’t the home run by Ryan Howard, which was the only blemish on a solid performance by Bartolo Colon. It was that eighth inning. This game will wash away with time while hopefully the Mets get better and put some distance between them and April. And no, I wouldn’t expect that the Mets would go 19-0 against the Phillies. But boy that eighth inning was a punch to the gut.
And speaking of a punch to the gut the Mets have as many home runs as Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
