Frozen Four: Poor Officiating on Display

First I want to be clear, officiating didn’t cost UND the game on Thursday night. They didn’t play well enough to win. That being said, in what world is Marco Hunt deserving to officiate a game in the Frozen Four?

I think that college hockey should be like the NHL. The best officials in college hockey should be rewarded with the best officiating opportunities. There is no reason that these two guys should’ve been officiating last night’s game.

The officiating was equally bad both ways. Nick Schmaltz was lucky he wasn’t kicked out of the game for his check to the head on Terriers forward Danny O’Regan. One could make the argument that was a missed call.

Here’s an example of what I am talking about. On his way off of the ice, BU forward Evan Rodrigues tries to take Steph Pattyn’s head off with a dirty high-stick. Pattyn responds like you would expect him to respond. Pattyn never gets to Rodrigues, but is still given a penalty.
