Golden Bears Update

University of Alberta Golden Bears

Last weekend the University of Alberta Golden Bears played a huge two game series in Saskatoon against the #1 ranked team in the country, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Bears came into the weekend as the #3 ranked team in the CIS after posting a 1-1 record the weekend prior in a series versus Mount Royal.

University of Saskatchewan Huskies

The Bears lost the Friday night contest 3-2 after Logan McVeigh scored two in the third period to give the Huskies the win, despite the Golden Bears outshooting the Huskies 46-25. The U of A powered back on Saturday boosted by a great game by defensemen Jordan Rowley, who blasted home two power play goals and lead the Golden Bears to a 4-2 victory. The shots in game #2 were simply dominant in favour of the Bears with a 55-22 spread.

(I was thinking Bill Burr there. “It’s got a good spread,” was ringing in my mind. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out https://youtu.be/x9iYvyffAh4; not recommended for minors!)

Total shots for the weekend were 101-47 in favour of the University of Alberta. Obviously the CIS doesn’t take shots into account in their National Rankings as the Golden Bears stayed at #3 while the Huskies dropped to the #2 spot. UNB ascended to the top of the hill for this week.

University of Manitoba Bisons

This weekend, the Bears’ Jordan Hickmott will clash with Jordan DePape of the University of Manitoba Bisons. The pair is tied for second spot in the Canada West scoring race. The Bisons are not in the top 10 of the CIS National Rankings and sit 5th in the Canada West with a 4-3-1 record.

It is a two game series at the Clare Drake with the Friday night game starting at 7:00pm and the Saturday game starting at 6:00pm (the ticket image below is wrong as the Bears website is advertising the reverse times; nicely done Ticketmaster) . If the Bears can out-shoot the #2 ranked team in the country 101-47 in a two game set, just imagine what they’ll do to the team who sits in fifth spot in the Canada West. If you have never tried Golden Bears Hockey, this would be a good weekend to start.
