Golden Bears vs. Dinos; U of A post weekend update

The University of Alberta swept a home-and-home series with the University of Calgary Dinos over the weekend. The Friday game was played on an olympic sized sheet of ice at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary. The game, which was available online on CanadaWest.tv, saw the Bears win by a score of 6-1, despite Alberta only edging Calgary on the shot clock by a 30-27 margin.

Stephane Legault and Jordan Hickmott both lead the Golden Bears with a goal and assist each and Legault’s marker came short handed on a breakaway late in the third period. Alberta defenceman Wil Tomchuk scored his first ever career CIS goal on Friday night.

There had to be some relief on the Alberta side as finally the pucks were going in; recent games saw Alberta outshoot their opponents by wide margins only to have the scores remain close. Over both games the Bears seemed more intent on getting to the dirty areas; hopefully a sign of what is to come for the remainder of the season.

Saturday night the Bears returned home to the Clare Drake for the second half of the weekend series versus Calgary. The Bears won by a score of 1-0. Game 2 was a much tighter affair going to the first period of four-on-four overtime. At 1:33 of the extra frame Thomas Carr scored, with assists to Sawyer Lange and Jordan Hickmott, to give the Bears the victory. Alberta edged Calgary in shots with a 33-26 spread.

Luke Siemens was excellent in goal for the Golden Bears both nights. He was particularly sharp in the Saturday night contest as he had to make several key stops to allow Alberta to win in overtime and to earn himself a shutout. He now owns a 1.71 GAA and 0.929 SP and leads all goaltenders in the Canada West.

Other Bears Notes

  • The Golden Bears are the second place team in the Canada West, three points back of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Alberta has a 8-3-1 record compared to the 10-2 mark set by Saskatchewan.
