Hey, guys! We’re only 17 games out in the division now! At this point in the season, I wouldn’t normally watch the remainder of the games, but with my new love for blogging, I watch each game with a critical eye to provide the best analysis of each game.
Tonight, I am glad that I watched the game. The Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 8-4 to avoid being swept for the third time in the last 29 days. Matt Harvey was outstanding, throwing 7.2 innings, striking out 8, and allowing just one run on four hits. Frank Francisco tried his best to give up the lead in the ninth inning by allowing three runs, but to no avail. Jon Rauch came on and recorded the final out in the ninth to secure the Mets’ 56th win of the season.
Harvey also drove in two runs with an RBI double. Ike Davis and Jason Bay added solo homeruns each to propel the Mets to victory. Ruben Tejada and Mike Baxter added RBIs.
At nine games back in the Wild Card, it is pretty safe to say that the season is over. The downfall began after the All Star Break, as it has in previous years, and the Mets got too far off track to get back on again this year.
You see, back in April, I made a bet with my Yankee-fan-friend. The bet was a simple one. If the Mets won MORE than 75 games, he would give me $25. If the Mets won 75 games or less, I would hand over the cash. I was pretty confident at that point that I would win the bet. We made other bets that I wasn’t so confident about; he had a higher batting average than me on our high school’s JV baseball team, costing me $25. I knew that I could easily make that up by scoring higher on our end-of-year exams.
Now, the Mets have me wondering if I will come out on top in our series of bets. In order for that to happen, New York will have to go 19-25 over the last 44 games.
It goes a lot deeper than just a bet, though. Every year, Mets fans are happy and excited in April. Everything seems to finally be in place and they play good baseball for a while. Then, things turn south. I’m not sure why, but it doesn’t seem fair that the most loyal fans in baseball have to be subjected to this.
I know the Mets won tonight, and it was impressive, yes, but still… looking at the NL East standings makes me want to puke.
New York is back in action tomorrow at 7:05 PM in Washington, D.C. against the first-place Nationals.
