I was fortunate enough to be invited to speak at one of the Amazin’ Tuesday events a couple of seasons back which was put together by Faith and Fear in Flushing bloggers Greg Prince and Jason Fry. It was then that I met Dana Brand, author of Mets Fan and The Last Days of Shea. I couldn’t help but be captivated by Dana as he spoke … his knowledge and passion for the Mets combined with his engaging personality made an impression on me that will never fade. He was the sage of our Mets community who, via his blog, encapsulated perfectly the pain and joy of being a Mets fan. One of his final posts about the Wilpon mess portrays this passion perfectly. He was eloquent, knowledgeable (which is understating it), and friendly. It’s rare that somebody could make such an impression having only met him once, but Dana was certainly one of a kind.
Today, the Mets community and the baseball community are mourning Dana’s passing. We lost our sage, and we lost him too soon. No doubt he’s pulling up at a table captivating the angels over a cold one with stories about our favorite baseball team.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. People that knew him best, certainly much better than myself, have penned great tributes that you can find here and here.
