Same old stupid story for the Mets. First inning, up 2-0 with the bases loaded and nobody out and a huge chance to put the game to bed early. Michael Conforto strikes out, and Wilmer Flores grounds into a double play.

And they regretted it in the bottom of that very inning as Steven Matz gave up three runs. Then after Rene Rivera’s single tied it, Matz gave up a three run dinger to Mark Teixeira to give the Yankees a 6-3 lead after two innings. Then the next time Teixeira faced Matz, one got away and hit Teixeira in the ankle, and he got huffy for no reason. It was obvioius that Matz wasn’t pleased with the pitch, and you don’t bean a guy in the ankles. Matz has more smarts than to go after a guy because he tagged him for a home run. But still …

The Mets then loaded the bases in the seventh with nobody out. But we’ve seen this movie too many times before to not know how it ends. Jay Bruce, who was brought to the Mets for this very situation, struck out looking. Luis Severino got out of the jam by giving up a run on a groundout, then another strikeout of Conforto. It has become way too predictable at this point.

Hansel Robles then collapsed in the bottom of the seventh giving up three runs. But worse than that he let his mind go to mush as he stared down Teixeira at second base because Robles thought he was stealing signs. That being the reason he fell apart is just awful, and he deserved his fate. Teixeira laughing like Mr. Ed after playing games with Robles after realizing what Robles was thinking is reason enough to hit him for real, but Robles can’t let himself sink to that level.

After window dressing by Neil Walker in the ninth, the Mets dropped a 9-5 decision in a game that was pointing all Mets at the beginning of the night. The Mets haven’t won two games in a row in just under a month. That doesn’t sound like anything close to a playoff team to me.

And oh, by the way:

Lovely.
