Auston Matthews is going to be one of the top American players taken in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Matthews was on record as being interested in the NCAA and the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League. Five NCAA schools appeared to be in the running for Matthews (Boston College, Boston University, Denver, Michigan and North Dakota). I have read a few blog posts and tweets that also had Wisconsin in the running for the young phenom.
None of that seems to matter now.
Apparently, the NCAA and the WHL are now out of the running for Matthews. According to multiple articles, it appears that Matthews is headed to has reportedly signed with the Swiss top division’s ZSC Lions.
According to the Blick, the ZSC Lions have found their fourth import-player in 17-year-old American forward Auston Matthews. The young talent is widely projected to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. (Swiss Hockey News)
I don’t think that anyone should be shocked by these revelations. Matthews going the NCAA route was a stretch at best and if Matthews had gone the NCAA route, he would have been a one and done. Matthews will probably make and immediate impact in the NHL during the 2016 season.
