Jordan Papirny – Stocking The Cupboard

Papirny Wheat Kings

One of my daily traditions is reading Lowetide’s blog, and on Friday morning of last week, he dropped a small note in his post about projecting the upcoming rookie roster, which you can read here.

That small note that our friend LT dropped? That G Jordan Papirny would be attending Oilers camp, something Papirny told the Pipeline Show’s Guy Flaming a little over a week ago.

Papirny attended Edmonton’s rookie orientation camp back in the summer, and we can safely assume that he’ll be on the roster that plays in Penticton in exactly one month, on September 11th.

Papirny has a chance to make an Oiler organization that, simply put, is weak in net. The Oilers are betting on Cam Talbot as their starter for the upcoming season, and they are betting on Laurent Brossoit as the goalie of the future. LB will be the starter in Bakersfield this coming season.

After that? Edmonton is housing a bunch of bets and projects. Ben Scrivens imploded last season, and is in a contract year this year. No doubt he is playing to remain an Oiler. Anders Nilsson is also on a one-year deal, but he’s struggled mightily throughout his North American career.

Papirny

Eetu Laurikainen is a complete unknown, while Ty Rimmer is on an AHL contract. The point I’m trying to make here? After Brossoit, Edmonton doesn’t have much bubbling under in terms of goalies for the future. Papirny could certainly snag a contract, possibly an AHL one, and be part of the future in Edmonton.

Stats are via HockeyDB.

2012-13 Sherwood Park Crusaders AJHL 1 0 0 32 4 0 0 7.48 18 0.818
2012-13 Brandon Wheat Kings WHL 3 0 0 127 6 0 0 2.84 1 1 0 50 0.893

2014-15 Brandon Wheat Kings WHL 59 5 0 3566 163 4 5 2.74 44 9 6 1653 0.910 19 0 0

That .910 SV% isn’t anything to write home about, but he played well in some big games for the Wheat Kings, especially against the Oil Kings in the opening round of the WHL playoffs this past spring.

He looked good at orientation camp in July, and if he has a good camp, he could join the organization. Papirny has a chance to impress and make the organization at a position that is a clear weakness. Vladdy Tkachev had the same opportunity and made more than the most of it a year ago. Will Papirny?
