The NHL gets things right. This past weekend, Florida Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kuliko caught Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin with a dirty hit. Seguin was injured on the play. Today, after his hearing, Kuliko was given a four-game suspension.
NHL.COM –After intercepting a Kulikov pass in the neutral zone, Seguin carries the puck through the middle of the ice and into the Florida zone. Sliding directly across the ice just inside of the Panthers blue line, Kulikov bends severely at the waste and throws his body across Seguin’s knees, flipping Seguin dangerously to the ice and causing a significant knee injury. This is clipping.
While the hip-check is an increasingly rare play in the NHL, it remains legal if delivered properly. However, it has long been illegal to deliver any type of body check at or below the knees. When such a check is delivered the player delivering the check is responsible for any consequences and supplemental discipline can be merited.
This past weekend, Denver Pioneers forward Trevor Moore hit UND forward Drake Caggiula with a dirty hit.
Here’s my question, the NHL suspended a player for a very similar hit. Should the NCHC give Moore a suspension for his dirty, low hit? I think he should sit for a game or two. I not, why?
