Last Chance Power Drive Goes Off The Cliff

Mike Pelfrey lost to the Phillies again? Here’s my shocked face:

While this may be the Winter of Reyes, I hope that the Mets find time to lay some Reeses Pieces along the side of the road so Pelfrey can find them and repeat “Oooh, piece of candy” twenty times before being trapped under the box, which will then be sent to the Cardinals so Pelfrey can fulfill his destiny of throwing a no-hitter against the Mets. Off you go, Little Pelf.

What’s bothering me today is people suggesting that Pelfrey could return to the Mets because he’s young and cheap. Let me ask you: does “young and cheap” conveniently erase “awful”? The Mets are already going to keep Niese, Dickey, Gee, and at least try to keep Capuano … and bring Santana back on top of that. This is going to be a 79 win team at best, same as last season. Do you really want to see the entire starting rotation come back from a 79 win team? Especially if the pitching coach is going to remain the same (which I’m not sure will be the case) It absolutely can’t happen … not simply because somebody’s young, cheap, and easy. (That’s how diseases spread.) And even if Warthen does get the boot, a change in pitching coaches only work for so long (see Peterson, Perez, and 2008.)

This may not be the best way to go for Pelfrey, but it’s time to go. Enjoy your newfound success against us in St. Louis.
