TheOilersRig.com is proud to announce the start of a new series we will be doing through the start of December!
It’s that time of year, where everyone gets their quarterly evaluations, today we are going to be grading 2nd/3rd line center, winger,
utility man Mark Arcobello.
Making the Grade… Mark Arcobello
Team Play: A
Mark Arcobello has done everything the coaching staff has asked of him. Whether it be to kill penalties, go on the power-play, centre the third and fourth lines after Gagner came back, or to play the wing on either line. Since day 1 of his camp and game 1 of the regular season, he has been the ultimate team player. He goes out there and gives 110%, he isn’t the biggest on the ice, but he makes himself the biggest guy. He is never shy to jump into a scrum to help defend his team mates and avoids miscues that would hurt the team. He doesn’t take stupid penalties, doesn’t force passes to often, and always seems to make the right play. He has a great team first mentality, always looking to put his teammates in a better position on the ice. His compete level is one of the highest on the teams, and its visible his hard work has paid off. He doesn’t just make his line mates better, he makes his whole team better. Keep it up Arco!
Offense:A
Do I really need to say anything about Arcos offence? He has far exceeded everyone’s expectations, even his own. I was one of the non believers in him. I didn’t think he was ready. I didn’t really think that he would match up well, and that he may even get tossed around and look out of place. But wow, did he ever prove me wrong, he was making all the right plays, moving the puck well and created some absolute great chemistry on the second line. His passing abilities and vision in my opinion are only behind Ryan Nugent Hopkins. He plays with some grit in his game, but uses his small stature to his advantage to get in and out of the tough areas with ease and come out with the puck. He’s not afraid to go to the net either, to create some havoc in front. He does still have a little bit of the AHL mentality, he shoots when he should pass and he passes when he should shoot sometimes. If he could work on his accuracy with his shot, he could be a potential 20-25 goal scorer in this league.
Defense:B
He is still has a some things to work out on the defensive of his game, but he still plays a sound game. I was really impressed with his positioning in the defensive zone, especially after losing a draw. For someone who has played the majority of his pro career in the ECHL and AHL, he adjusted to the pace rather well, which was a key factor in him playing such a sound defensive game. He doesn’t quit on the play, and back checks hard whether he is the first or last man back. But again he still has a bit of that AHL mentality and tends to run around on the penalty kill, as well as in his own zone when its 5 on 5. He is a minus 3 on the year but at one point did lead this team in plus/minus, but has since dropped off, mind you he hasn’t played the last 5 games. Overall he plays a solid game, still has a few things to work out, but that will come with time and experience in the NHL.
Overall Grade=A
Mark Arcobello, did more than he was asked, and exceeded everyone’s expectations. He has been a true pro since day one of camp this year and has taken everything in stride. His point production tailed off, but that didn’t change the way he was playing the game, at one point he was leading the entire NHL in assists. He has proven me and a many critics wrong. He is a very humble player, much like one of his other centres (Sam Gagner) and has taken every opportunity he’s got this year and ran a country mile with it. He works hard day in and day out, and doesn’t take this for granted. Heres to hoping he is here stay for awhile!
