Marriage of the Convenient

So Chris Young has agreed to join the New York Mets.  It could only be assumed that Young’s agent, Lon Babby, couldn’t get that big money offer from Beirut that he was looking for.

So Young, pending the physical that J.J. Putz never got, is a New York Met.  Considering the tight budget restrictions that have befallen this team, Sandy Alderson did all that he could do.  If he was only authorized to spend a million and a half, getting Chris Young isn’t a disaster when you take the alternatives into account.  Yeah, nobody’s going to flock to Citi Field just to see one of Chris Young’s 15 starts before he gets injured in a freak yoga accident, but while he’s healthy he’s going to be effective.  So while it isn’t like the Bo Derek/Dudley Moore beach scene like the Johan Santana trade was, and it’s more like the last two kids in the class agreeing to be lab partners because there’s no other choice, this move does help.

Though if I was Dillon Gee, I’d look into an Jet Blue bonus miles program with all those Buffalo to New York trips he’ll be taking.  And I’d rent, not own.
