Over the next few weeks, we’re going to reintroduce our readers to the crew here at the Oilers Rig. With a number of new writers on board, we thought it would be a good idea to let you all know who exactly is writing about your favourite team.

Without further ado…..

Tell us a little bit about yourself, beyond your passion for the Oilers:

Dave Gordon

I’m a father of 2 awesome daughters, work in the oil industry. I really enjoy fishing, especially in the winter and I’ve recently taken up hunting. The more I’m outside the better.

Jackie Dawson

I am the proud momma of an 8 year old miniature schnauzer named Scout. I am a bit of a sassy little monkey, I swear a lot and I don’t really have a “grey area”…pretty much black and white with me. I also work full time at the Cross Cancer Institute, work part time doing sales and then in my “spare” time I plan fundraising events and write articles for The Oilers Rig!

Alex Thomas

Currently I’m a senior at Springfield College studying Communications and Sports Journalism. Unfortunately, that means I have to live in the real world this summer so there’s that. I’m currently trying to get into the journalism field and am interning for a team in the AHL at this time.

Jon McLeod

I live in Halifax and pastor a church. I’m married with four children–two boys and two girls. I’m also a fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. And anyone who thinks the Patriots won their Super Bowls due to cheating is either delusional, a sore loser, or both.

Megan Fowler

I’m a high school English teacher in Edmonton, and I’ve been doing that for 9 years. I took a year off to study in Ireland in 2012-13, and earned a Masters degree in Modern Irish History while drinking a lot of beer and discovering that there are, in fact, at least 40 shades of green. I also sing in a choir and am a volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada; I’ve been told by a coworker that this means I’m a “very complicated person”. When I’m not at work, singing, or at Brownies, I’m probably binge-watching stuff on Netflix or waiting not-so patiently for new episodes of both The X-Files and The Walking Dead. (During the NFL season, you can find me most Sundays in the fetal position on my couch, hoping the Green Bay Packers play well enough to win.)

Kelly (BLH)

I’m an Oilersaholic. I live in Taipei, Taiwan but I’m originally from the metropolis of Camrose, Alberta! I make my living playing whiteboard games, card games, drawing silly pictures, and being an ass for kids who want to learn our lovely English language. I also sell shirts… GO BUY SOME!

Kris Hansen

I’m a first year teacher with Edmonton Public. I did six and a half years of post secondary, starting out in Social Work beforehand. Beyond the Oilers, I’m a huge hockey nut. I really like the history of hockey and I have over 100 books about hockey ranging from season by seasons, player biographies and other topics. Besides hockey I like football; I used to coach it for 5-6 years. I like the Edmonton Eskimos and the Cleveland Browns in the CFL and NFL respectively. I don’t mind some baseball and basketball but I’m not as hardcore in those sports as the other ones.

Ali Arshad

Aside from watching hockey, I also watch hockey, and if you’ve heard of hockey, that too. But actually other than hockey, I’m also a pretty big cricket (the real version) fan, which is kind of weird because it’s kind of the complete opposite of hockey (a game lasts 5 days, probably the slowest sport). I’m a huge public transit nerd, to the point that I go to other cities to ride their public transportation. In my other free time, I love playing sports, especially squash, and in the summers Ultimate Frisbee!

Avry Lewis-McDougall

This might sound crazy but they used to call me Superman. Aside from that I’m a sports host/writer/reporter and I’ve worked in sports media since I was 15 years old. In my time in this wacky world I’ve had the chance to cover games and events in the NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB and the Women’s World Cup (soccer). I’ve also interviewed such names as Mike Modano, Warren Moon and Jeremy Roenick. I currently split my time between Edmonton and Drakeronto. Keep your eyes peeled for when Drizzy and myself drop a mixtape.
