One thing about Sandy Alderson: he’s no dummy. What’s the best way to distract Mets fans from the latest debacle and throw up a test balloon to the fans? Of course, arrange an interview in the SNY booth during the game and hint that the fences are moving in.
We’re looking at it. We’re taking a very serious look at it. Done some analyses. I think some time in October, at the latest, we’ll make a decisions as to what exactly we’re going to do. I did say that if we do something, it won’t be subtle.
Aah, pretty sneaky, sis. Throw it out there to the masses, reiterate it to the beat reporters, and watch the positive reaction roll in. Well here’s mine: Lower the left field wall, and the center field wall. There’s no reason to do anything else. Look, if a big park like Citi Field has the ability to get into so many players’ heads, then the simple act of lowering walls while not doing anything more drastic can have an opposite effect … almost like a placebo. Frankly, I don’t want to see Citi become a band box for the sake of placating angry mobs and bringing in more casual fans. Isn’t that what steroids were for?
The hardcore baseball, I think, enjoys the 2-1, 3-2 [games]. We’re appealing to a little broader segment. And I think offense is appealing. Offense sells.
So instead of bringing the prices down to bring more people in the park, they’ll bring the fences in. Forget the players … looks like the psychology is being used on us instead. Bring the fences in, bring the people to the ballpark that think the enjoyment of a baseball game is proportionate to the amount of runs scored. Seems we have plenty of those … well not plenty, but a high percentage. Hey, want to sell offense? Stop signing players who can’t hit. Problem solved. Although you could move the fences back to the Holiday Inn and it wouldn’t help Mike Pelfrey and the group of criminals who impersonate a bullpen night in and night out.
Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Mets did this to make David Wright happy, then wind up trading him? There wouldn’t be enough analyses or sabermetrics to predict the amount of flies the Mets would draw at that point.
